"The Hatrocks and the Gruesomes" is the nineteenth episode of the fifth season of the original series, The Flintstones. It aired on January 22, 1965.

Synopsis[]

The Flintstones need to get rid of their house guests, the hillbilly Hatrocks, and hope that their creepy and sinister neighbors, the Gruesomes, can be of help.

Plot[]

The Hatrocks have declared a truce with the Flintstones and come to Bedrock and Flintstone home territory to visit, and Fred does not dare to offend his irritating guests, whose extended stay is crowding the Flintstones out of their own house, not to mention skyrocketing Fred's food bill.

Fred asks the Gruesomes to scare the irritating Hatrocks into leaving his property, but the Hatrocks are anything but frightened by the Gruesomes. Fred's last hope involves bombarding the Hatrocks' ears with detested "bug music". The backwoods Hatrocks cannot abide the Beatles-like singing of Flintstones, Rubbles, and Gruesomes, and depart Fred's abode in haste to attend Bedrock's World's Fair. However, upon seeing a billboard on the way advertising a concert of bug music by the group The Four Insects, the Hatrocks flee back to Arkanstone instead.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • This episode marked the second and final appearance of the Hatrocks.
  • Clem Kadiddlerock is a spoof of Clem Kadiddlehopper, whose name is based upon a Red Skelton character.

Allusions[]

  • The song that the Flintstones, the Rubbles and the Gruesomes with Dino and Hoppy sing "She Said, Yeah Yeah Yeah" is an obvious takeoff of The Beatles' "She Loves You".
    • Although the Four Insects and their "bug" music are supposed to be a parody of the Beatles, the style of guitar playing is actually surf guitar. In fact, the music is actually the backing track of "That Surfin' Craze," the song Jimmy Darrock sings in 'Surfin' Fred.'

Errors[]

  • Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty are hiding from the Hatrocks when they perform their Bug Music song. They know the Hatrocks will only hear them (over the radio and telephone) but will not actually see them....So why did they bother donning wigs?
