The Flintstones

The Flintstones: The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak is a 1994 platform video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System released by Taito Corporation. The game was never released in Japan unlike its predecessor, The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy.

Gameplay[]

In this game, the player can switch playable characters between both Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, and they both have different attacks and abilities; in the original, the only playable character is Fred.

Fred Flintstone attacks enemies with a club that has limited range, but can be charged up for more powerful swings. He also has the ability to grab ledges and pull himself up.

Barney Rubble attacks enemies from a distance with a slingshot. He can also climb onto and shimmy across poles and ropes that aren't big enough to hold Fred.

In addition, Fred and Barney can attack enemies with stone axes and bowling balls.

Plot[]

When Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm go missing, Fred and Barney set out to find them. They soon find them at the foot of Dinosaur Peak, but the mountain suddenly erupts, and a flow of lava cuts Fred and Barney off from the kids. The Great Gazoo appears, and while he admits seismology is not his specialty, he tells Fred and Barney about a legend of a Fire Dinosaur that lives in the volcano, and they should find him and talk to him to stop the eruption. The Pterodactyls can get Fred and Barney up the mountain, but refuse to do so unless Fred and Barney bring them 5 gemstones. Fred and Barney navigate around Dinosaur Peak, defeating several bosses and collecting gemstones. With the five gemstones collected, the Pterodactyls take them up Dinosaur Peak, where they engage the Fire Dinosaur. Defeating him causes him to cry out for his much larger mother, but Fred and Barney defeat her as well, and she agrees to stop the volcano.

However, this leaves Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm upset, as they came to Dinosaur Peak to toast marshmallows over the lava, but now that the lava has stopped, they can't.

Availability[]

The Flintstones: The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak is believed to have been released in North America exclusively to Blockbuster Video as a rental title. Though despite constantly being cited as such in modern online reviews and websites, no evidence has been found and some have even refuted the claim by saying that the game was sold in regular stores.

Despite this, it remains one of the rarest games for the NES due to its late release during the console's lifespan and a low number of copies produced. As of 2017 copies of the game available on eBay and other similar sites usually sell for over $800 USD to as high as $1,500 as of 2016. In Europe, the game is slightly more common and cheaper but still typically sell for over US$1,000.
