"Hollyrock, Here I Come" is the tenth episode of the first season of the original series, The Flintstones. It aired on December 2, 1960.

Synopsis[]

Wilma and Betty win an all-expenses-paid trip to Hollyrock, which gets even better when Wilma is offered a part in a show.

Plot[]

Wilma and Betty win a slogan contest with, "Mother McGuire's Meatballs don't bounce." The prize is an all-expenses-paid vacation for two in Hollyrock. Fred and Barney consent to their spouses' Hollyrock lark and plan to enjoy unlimited recreation (bowling, pool, roller skating) for the duration of Wilma and Betty's absence.

However, the pair soon miss their wives and decide to join them by flying economy-class to Hollyrock. Once there, Fred and Barney find Wilma and Betty in a theater, where Wilma has been hired to play the long-suffering wife to an overbearing, deceitful husband, the title character of "The Frogmouth", a stage production to be broadcast live to 60 million homes. After the original tall and muscular "Frogmouth" proves to have an unsuitably wimpy voice, the uptight producer hears Fred yelling at Wilma for lurking with strangers in a darkened theater, and is overjoyed to have discovered the perfect "Frogmouth" in Flintstone.

Never one to sneer at a chance for fame and fortune, Fred is happy to essay the "Frogmouth" role, and his ego becomes insufferable to the producer, who negates his contract with the bona-fide "Frogmouth" Fred by telling Fred about the size of the audience and instilling stage fright to such an extent that Fred's speech is reduced to squeaks. It requires a statement by Wilma, once the Flintstones and Rubbles have returned to Bedrock, that she has bought a $5,000 fur coat on credit, to restore Fred's hot-tempered bombast.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Fred gives himself the pet name of "Poopy."
  • The Frogmouth Producer is voiced by Jerry Mann a la Phil Silvers playing his famed Sgt. Bilko character, same as early Dino in the "The Snorkasaurus Hunter". The well known gag of the Frogmouth Producer taking an egotistical Fred down a peg or two is from the same year's Elmer Fudd from the Bugs Bunny short, "From Person to Bunny", which it was the last time that Elmer was voiced by radio character actor Arthur Q. Bryan, who passed away earlier, in 1959.
  • When Betty and Wilma are taking off on their airplane, Betty tells Barney "Don't forget to feed the cat". With the exception of the cat seen in "High School Fred", the Rubbles' only pet was Hoppy.
  • The title of this episode is a spoof of one of Al Jolson's greatest hits, "California, Here I Come".
  • The animation (by George Nicholas) where Fred became stage fright and his speech was reduced to squeaks would later be recycled in the episode of the second season, "Alvin Brickrock Presents".

Errors[]

  • Either Rockville Airport has replaced the Bedrock Airport, or there's two airports in Bedrock.
